The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile Spotted!

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile was on campus at the University of Alabama this week and my daughter Josie got a selfie with it!!

You know she’s smiling under that mask. How can anyone NOT smile when they see the Wienermobile?

According to Oscarmeyer.com, the first Wienermobile appeared on the streets of Chicago in 1936. Oscar Meyer wanted to give people something to smile about after many years of hardship during the Great Depression.  Unfortunately, that Wienermobile was scrapped for metal during World War II. The company made new Wienermobiles in 1987. There are currently six rolling across America now.

The Wienermobiles aren’t the only brilliant marketing tool that Oscar Mayer came up with. In the early 1900s, grocery stores bought sausages from a variety of local butchers. A shopper would see a glass case full of frankfurters, bratwursts, and wieners and pick some without knowing who had made them or even what was in them. That was sort of scary because not all butchers made their sausages with meat. Dishonest butchers might mix in brains, kidneys, or liver as filler. Oscar Mayer had a reputation for high quality. He thought that if people knew which sausages were his, they would choose them. In 1929, he started putting a band around his sausages and coined the slogan, “Look for the brand with the yellow band.” It was the first branded meat. His idea worked and look at the Oscar Mayer company now.

By the way, if you would like to drive a Wienermobile, there are openings for Hotdoggers.
